Planning on laying a flagstone patio?
Many people pick flagstone over man made interlocking bricks
or cement patio stones, one of the main reasons is because flagstones unique
and adds natural beauty to any patio project.
I've personally been working with flagstone for several years now. During the years I've seen many friends, clients and other people in our neighborhood attempt to install flagstone. In almost all cases one of the follow mistakes have occurred.
When installing a flagstone patio it's
important you know what your doing, if it's you're first time
installing flagstone then avoid making any of the
following 5 mistakes.
1: Patio Size - This is
one of the most common mistakes people make. The patio looks beautiful and is finally finished. BUT now it's time to bring out the patio furniture. Yes! you
guessed it, the table and chairs fit on the patio but they take up all the patio area. Make sure you take into account the amount of room patio furniture will take up and at a minimum have room comfortably walk around the furniture.
2: Purchasing Flagstone - Never just
pick up the phone and call your local stone supplier to order
flagstone. NO one pallet of flagstone is the same, each pallet is
unique, some are good and some are bad, it's important that you
physically see the exact pallet or rows of flagstone your going to buy. Also most natural products have a No return policy.
3: Patio Grade
- When laying a patio always make sure the final height of the
flagstone is slightly higher than the surrounding area, and slightly slopping towards the direction you want any water run off to flow towards. If it's level
or lower than the surrounding area the water run-off will have a hard
time finding a place to go or end up turning the patio into a
shallow pool during a heavy rainfall. Always try divert any water run
off away from your house foundation.
4: Flagstone Base -
When laying flagstone you need a solid and well compacted base, not using enough
material for the patio base will only result in problems down the
road. After a short time you will see flagstone start sinking and
slowly spreading out in different directions.
5: Lack Of Knowledge
- A DIY flagstone patio is not hard to complete, but when doing it
yourself you still need to spend money on materials, so it's important you know what steps to take. Not knowing how to
install a patio correctly can end up costing you more money and
time than you may expect. It's like attempting to assemble a TV wall unit for Ikea without instructions. Sure it's possible, but not knowing exactly what needs to be done will only result in mistakes.
